One grey tick means your message has left your phone and reached WhatsApp’s servers, but it has not yet been delivered to the recipient’s device. It says nothing about whether the message has been read.
Most of the time the tick changes within seconds. When it doesn’t, the reason is usually ordinary: the other person’s phone is off, they have no signal, or you have a connection problem. Only in one specific pattern, covered below, does a single tick point to a block.
- One grey tick means your message reached WhatsApp’s servers but hasn’t been delivered to the recipient’s device yet.
- A single tick never means “read”; only two blue ticks confirm the message was opened.
- The usual causes are an offline or switched-off phone, no signal, an inactive number, or a WhatsApp outage.
- A permanent single tick can point to a block, but only when it appears together with other signs, such as a missing last seen or profile photo updates.
- To fix it, check your own connection first, test another chat, update the app, and use another channel for anything urgent.
The WhatsApp Tick System at a Glance
WhatsApp is used by more than 3 billion people every month, a milestone widely reported from March 2025. India has the largest user base of any country, at over 500 million by industry estimates. So the small icon beside each message is one of the most-read symbols in daily communication.
| Symbol | Status | What It Means |
| Clock | Pending | The message hasn’t left your phone yet, usually because of connectivity issues. |
| One grey tick | Sent | The message reached WhatsApp’s servers, but not the recipient’s device. |
| Two grey ticks | Delivered | The message reached the recipient’s device but hasn’t been marked as read. |
| Two blue ticks | Read | The recipient opened the chat and read the message, assuming read receipts are enabled. |

Why Does My WhatsApp Message Show Only One Tick?
1. The recipient is offline. A switched-off phone, airplane mode, or no mobile data or Wi-Fi all keep a message at one tick. It will deliver automatically when they reconnect. Depending on how long they stay offline, that can be minutes or days.
2. The recipient no longer uses that number or app. If someone uninstalled WhatsApp, changed numbers, or hasn’t opened the app in a long time, there may be no active device to deliver to.
3. WhatsApp is having an outage. If every chat is stuck, not just one, the problem is probably wider than one phone. Check an outage tracker or the news. A common mistake is assuming a single contact is at fault when the service is down.
4. The recipient has blocked you. WhatsApp’s own help material says messages sent to a contact who has blocked you will always show one check mark and never a second.
Does One Tick Mean Someone Blocked You?
Not on its own. WhatsApp deliberately keeps this ambiguous to protect the privacy of the person who blocks. Its help guidance lists several possible signs, none of them conclusive by itself:
- Your messages to that one person stay on a single tick and never reach two.
- You can no longer see their “last seen” or “online” status.
- Their profile photo stops updating.
- Your calls don’t connect.
Two details separate a block from a temporary glitch. A block affects only that one contact, while messages to everyone else send normally. And the signs tend to appear together. A single tick that lasts an afternoon is rarely a block. Even a pattern of several signs is only an indicator, because other explanations exist, such as a deleted account or an old number.

What Do Ticks Mean In Group Chats?
Group chats work differently because there are many recipients:
- Two grey ticks appear when the message has been delivered to every member.
- Two blue ticks appear only when every member has read it.
So one slow reader can keep the ticks grey even if most of the group has seen your message.
Can People Hide Blue Ticks?
Yes, with limits. Under Settings → Privacy, users can switch off Read receipts. The setting works both ways: if you stop sending read receipts in one-to-one chats, you also stop seeing other people’s.
Two things can’t be hidden:
- Read receipts in group chats stay on regardless of the setting.
- Voice message play receipts. The microphone still turns blue when a voice note is played.
The setting has no effect on the grey ticks, so turning off read receipts will never create a “one tick” situation. If someone edits a message after it’s been read, WhatsApp resets the read receipts for the edited version.
For context, blue ticks are not new. WhatsApp introduced read receipts in November 2014 and added the option to disable them within about a week, after users objected. More recently, WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp was testing blue receipts across all chat themes, after some themes had shown them in white and caused confusion.
How To Fix a Message Stuck On One Tick
Work from the simplest cause outward:
- Check your own connection. Open a webpage or send a message to someone else.
- Test another chat. If other messages deliver, the issue is specific to that contact.
- Update WhatsApp and restart your phone. An outdated app can occasionally cause delivery display bugs.
- Confirm the number is correct and active. A wrong or retired number never delivers.
- Check for an outage. If friends report the same problem, wait.
- Try another channel. For anything urgent, call or text.
For Businesses: Ticks In The WhatsApp Business API
Companies sending messages through the Business API see the same logic as delivery statuses: sent, delivered, read and failed. Two points help explain what looks like random single-tick behavior:
- WhatsApp enforces a customer-service window. Outside 24 hours since the customer’s last message, you generally need an approved template message. Failures there come back as error code 131047.
- Error 131026 means the message was undeliverable because of a recipient-side issue, such as an inactive number.
A contact who repeatedly stays at “sent” is better contacted through another channel than retried endlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does one tick mean the message was read?
No. It means the message reached WhatsApp’s servers only.
Is one grey tick the same as a clock?
No. A clock means the message hasn’t left your phone. One tick means it has.
How long can a message stay on one tick?
There is no official limit. A message can wait as long as the recipient stays offline, and it delivers once they reconnect.
Can I see when a message was delivered or read?
Yes. Press and hold the message and tap Info. Read times appear only if the other person has read receipts on.
Will a message sent while I was blocked deliver after I’m unblocked?
Messages sent to someone who had blocked you are not delivered later.
